Tuesday Evening Series on 6/22/2021
Valentine, Hogan win WRMYC Tuesday Series Races at SPIRE
Temperatures started in the upper 60’s with puffy clouds in the blue sky over SPIRE Institute in Harpersfield Township. The weather was near perfect with winds were from the West, with occasional clocking to North at 10-12 MPH; there were even a few gusts approaching the upper teens. This was the eighth Tuesday June 22 Series 12-Heat/ 2 discard Western Reserve Model Yacht Club June 12 race program of the 7-month Series.
Racing was delayed after one boat sank in Heat 2. This is very rare and has happened (now) just twice over approximately 6000 races of the club’s 15-year existence. Recovery efforts were unsuccessful and stalled racing for about 30 minutes - but the search resumes at Saturday’s next event!!
In Gold Fleet, Bob Valentine won on the strength of 6 first place finishes out of the 12 Heats. Rick Lawler and Series leader David Steger tied on points, but the tiebreaker of “most firsts” placed Lawler in second and Steger in third overall for the evening. Lawler’s win returned him to second place in the 7-month long Series standings, again switching Series places with Mike Wyatt who moved to Third for the year so far.
Early in the evening, Jim Hogan and Dan Jarold battled for the lead in Silver Fleet, with Hogan ahead by just 2 points after the first 6 Heats. At the end, after 12 Heats, Hogan prevailed by 10 points. Bob Kalman retired early with boat trouble, finishing third, but retained his Series lead.
