Tuesday Evening Series on 8/3/2021
Steger, Kalman win at Western Reserve Model Yacht Club- Tuesday August 3, 2021 at SPIRE
For the first WRMYC Tuesday in August the weather was spectacular. Gold Fleet and Silver Fleet sailors got in 12 GREAT races under partly cloudy skies and perfect 72 degree temperatures. Occasionally, the wind would approach 15 MPH but most of the time was just under 10, from the North, and fairly steady with less dramatic wind shifts. This means tacking on these subtle shifts, small as they were, meant better finishes. Courses were longer than usual because of the good air, and racing was very competitive. The evening was one we will look back on favorably as things get cooler around the end of October!!
The Gold Fleet competition ended with Tuesday Series leader David Steger in first, followed by Mike Wyatt, and Bob Schuster. Boats were often side-by-side halfway through a race, and sometimes less than a boat length separated at the finish.
In Silver Fleet, Bob Kalman won the evening, retaining his lead in the Silver Fleet 2021 Series standings. In second- Dan Jarold was only ONE point behind Bob for the evening.
And, with the club for their first sailing competitive experience were two youthful new Members, Kaleb and Vince, brothers, aged 10 and 14 respectively. The two brothers had each bought their first Soling 1 Meters, and (after some coaching earlier Tuesday afternoon), they joined the Silver Fleet for racing under the club’s “New Guy Rules”. They learned quickly. A 4.5 hour program is a long time for anyone especially younger sailors- and although they left early- they sailed well. The rest of the competitors are glad to have them sailing with us.
After number 14 of the scheduled 26 Tuesday Race dates, David Steger is leading the Gold Fleet year-long Tuesday evening Series by a margin of 6 points. Rick Lawler in second, and Mike Wyatt in third are within two points of each other in series standings.
