Tuesday Evening Series on 8/10/2021
Western Reserve Model Yacht Club Tuesday August 10, 2021 - at SPIRE: Wyatt, Kalman win
The weather prediction: hot and rain. But after torrential rains in the morning, then periodic thunderstorms during the day the skies began to lighten up as the late afternoon drew closer. By the club’s 4:30 practice time the weather was partly cloudy and a warm 85 degrees; winds were good- 7-12 MPH from the south. That wind direction remained pretty true through the first half of racing. About 6 PM there was a slight clocking in wind direction (about 10 degrees to the right-more SW).
The courses were changed to accommodate that shift, but with the Start well out in the pond, the job of Race Scorer Linda Kalman just became more difficult. As well, the races became more competitive as the sailors found the fastest ways to complete the extended two lap Heats.
In the Gold Fleet competition Mike Wyatt was first, followed by Bob Valentine then Rick Lawler. In Silver Fleet, Bob Kalman won the evening, retaining his considerable lead in the 2021 Series Fleet standings. “You can’t compete if you aren’t there” was never more obvious.
After number 15 of the scheduled 26 Tuesday Race dates, David Steger is still leading the Gold Fleet year-long Tuesday evening Series by a margin of 8 points. Rick Lawler and Mike Wyatt are tied for second. Bob Valentine and Bob Shuster are one point apart in 4th and 5th standings year to date. Season standings after 15 of 26 weekly Races are tightening up.
