Saturday Series Soling on 8/14/2021

Western Reserve Model Yacht Club Saturday August 14, 2021 - at SPIRE:

Beautiful weather at SPIRE!! Saturday August 14 found partly cloudy skies and room-like temperatures in the low 70’s even after a night of torrential rain. The forecast was winds NNE at 8 MPH eventually increasing to 12-14 MPH.

For the afternoon Soling 1 Meter competition, the predicted winds filled in, mostly from the NNE and over a nice range of 8 -12 MPH. Still there were small(er) wind shifts that made sailing the shortest distance to the Marks challenging, but the increase in wind velocity allowed courses to use the full lake, and several were multiple laps.

In the Soling 1 Meter Gold Fleet, Doug Rieger won his first daily set of heat races, actually tying Bob Schuster with 16 net points. It took three tiebreakers (most 1s.- same; most 2s-same; then most 3s – Rieger had three 3rds to Schuster’s two ) before the tie could be broken and Rieger declared the winner. Mike Wyatt was in Third, a single point out of a three-way tie. This was by far the closest set of races the club has seen this year, and maybe ever!!

In the Silver Fleet competition was also close. Ron Sieloff, the Series’ leader, was first, followed by Scott Westrum and Dan Jarold in second and third. The four competitors were spread over a range of a total of just 10 points in 9 races, and each won at least a single race.

Next: Tuesday August 17th at 4 PM, always at SPIRE, the Solings will race another set of Heats toward the Gold and Silver Fleet’s annual Championships.
