SPIRE: Lawler, and Kalman, win

Saturday, October 9 was the first scheduled Saturday race event, in the last month of competition of the Western Reserve Model Yacht Club’s 2021 season. Friday had been a night of torrential rain. That combined with a dire forecast, meant there was concern over even more rain on Saturday. But when we arrived at SPIRE, it was looking much better and the club opened its Micro Magic morning racing with winds from the South at 6-8 MPH and mostly cloudy skies.

Soling 1 Meter Class races:

In the Saturday afternoon Soling 1 Meter racing, the winds were about the same as in the morning session and temperatures had risen into the 70s.

In Gold Fleet Rick Lawler started off by winning three of the first five of nine Heats, interrupted only by David Steger winning Heats 3 and 5. Then Mike Wyatt finally got his boat tuned to win Heats 6 through 8. But, Doug Rieger won the final Heat, Rick Lawler won the day’s racing, with 13 points after discards, ahead of Doug Rieger’s18. In Third was David Steger, at 19 points after discard.

In Silver Fleet, Bob Kalman was First after Scott Westrum withdrew with technical difficulties.
