Saturday Series Soling on 4/23/2022
WRMYC had a decent first day of racing for 2022. In the past, these April days have seen snow, or at least VERY cold. But yesterday a sweatshirt or a sweatshirt with a windbreaker was perfect. By noon, we were removing the top layers as the sun came out and the temperature went into the mid-70s.
The wind started at SSE 8-9 mph or so for the Micro Magics, then clocked around to South and dropped into 4-6 mph for the Soling’s. Especially in the Micro Magics there were quite a few startup issues as sailors were making tuning adjustments- adding backstay tension, and repositioning the mainsail booms inward, and adding vang tension to depower and avoid offwind "diving". One MM had a leaking issue (it's first outing) and another smoked a sail servo as we approached Race 7, but these things will all be ironed out before next Saturday- our "5th Saturday" in April sail date.
The MM competition was not particularly close- but the Soling racing was. Rick Lawler prevailed in Gold, and Ron Sieloff won in Soling Silver. BUT, look at the results, Bob Kalman made a good showing and was just one point behind Ron after Heat #7 of 9, with 3 wins to Ron's 4 at that point. And Rick only won Soling Gold Fleet by a single point over David Steger. Consistent sailing is usually what wins the day!!
