2023 EC-12 NCR Summary:
Fifteen EC-12 sailors entered the 2023 NCR, which was held in Ohio at one of the premier RC sailing venues -- SPIRE Institute, in Geneva, OH. SPIRE is a "sports academy" - a 9th-12th grade, accredited, resident school where top high school athletes from around the World go for the best in athletic training and excellent pre-college education. The 5-acre pond there is an almost perfect venue, and SPIRE has its own fleet of Solings, which are used for RC sailing camps in the summer each year. WRMYC was asked to be the host for the event because the Club is an experienced regatta host, and Geneva lies about halfway between two of the EC-12s stronger areas- the East Coast, and Chicago.
Winds on Practice Day September 13 were close to non-existent. Day 2, the first day of racing, saw an initial postponement for wind to around 11 AM, before becoming light and variable from the SSW at 6 MPH and allowing 3 Races before the lunch break. A mid-day 180-degree directional change in wind to NNW brought better air up to a maximum of 10 MPH for the rest of the afternoon.
The regatta was dominated in the early going by Dave Ramos. After 11 races, Ramos led with 25 points ahead of second placed Jarl Wathne at 41.6, with Peter Feldman in Third, just a Redress behind at 42 points (all with no discards). As Day 1 of racing moved toward the late afternoon, and with better air, Peter Feldman began to close. By Race 18 Ramos led with 56, and Feldman was still 5 points behind at 61. Scott Ramos had moved into third with 72.
On the second day of racing the winds picked up slightly- still from the NNW and maxing at 12 mph. The positions established on the first day largely held through the second. At the 4 PM conclusion, Dave Ramos finished with 85 net points and the National Championship, ahead of Peter Feldman at 90. Third Place went to Alex Ramos at 119 net points.
This regatta could not have happened without WRMYC and all the Club volunteers working hard to make the courses fair, the starting lines square, and the scoring timely. It was great to be involved with such accomplished sailors making my job as Regatta Manager and Race Director as easy as they could be. It did not hurt that the weather (most of the time) worked in our favor giving us a North-South course, perfect for Spire’s lake. Sunny skies and good times were enjoyed by all.
I hope to see everyone at the next EC-12 regatta!!
